Awesome final day of Session 5 in Eldorado Canyon!

Friday, August 6th, 2010

We had a great last day in Eldorado Canyon-it rained on us a little bit right at the end of the day, but not hard, and all in all it was awesome! We began our day with some fun morning songs, including “Fred the Moose,” “Funky Chicken,” and “Boom-chicka-Boom!” After songs, we played an amazing game of Evil-ution…ask your camper whether they finished as an egg, a chicken, a dinosaur, Dr. Evil, a robot, or the Ruler of the Galaxy! Then, we split up into cabin groups and put on some sunscreen and filled up our water bottles. All four groups worked on their skits this morning–everyone practiced with the costumes!

The Campfire Camping Animals had a great time making popsicle stick creations, while the Swimming Jumping Dolphins had a super amount of fun playing with clay and going through a minefield. All of the groups had a great morning, and everyone settled down to eat lunch in the middle of the day. In the afternoon, we set up the Mountain Day Camp stage, and each group performed a skit for the whole camp! The Camping Animals performed “The Adventure of the Boy and the Princess,” the Dolphins performed “Little Red Riding Hood and the Animals,” the Thundercats performed “The Gnarly Fashion Show,” and the Bunnies performed “The Crime Scene.” All of the skits were awesome–check out myaocamps.com for photos!

In the afternoon, the Camping Animals enjoyed doing the lycra tube and playing with toobeez. The Bunnies did a teambuilding p-cord activity, as did the Thundercats. After a delicious snack of granola bars, we finished our day with a fabulous sing-off against the Girl Scouts, who were also in the canyon this week–we had a lot of fun singing our favorite songs as loudly as we could! We finished off with a lot of fun afternoon songs on the bus, including “I love the mountains” and “The Canoe Song.” The final bus ride back to Boulder was good fun; everyone had fun sitting next to their new friends and having one last chat!

We loved hanging out with all of the campers this session–hope you had as much fun as we did!

Awesome Day in Eldorado Canyon!

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

We had a great second Monday in Eldorado Canyon–we began our day with some wonderful morning songs, including “Fred the Moose” and “Little Red Wagon.” After singing, we played a rousing game of Ship-Island–ask your campers about the different commands! Then, we split up into our different groups and had a quick snack, put on some sunscreen and filled up our water bottles, and then began our day!

The Electric Pinecone-Throwing Bunnies and the Campfire Camping Animals headed out together on a hike–we hiked all the way along Fowler Trail, and then headed out of the park and into the wild! It was very exciting to go into the wilderness; we crossed a stream, saw lots of wildflowers, and found a nice shady spot to eat lunch. Meanwhile, the Thundercats headed out on an epic bouldering/hiking trip–check out the amazing photos they took! (You can find them online at myaocamps.com.) Meanwhile, Counselor Leah’s group, the Swimming Jumping Dolphins, took a short trek over to the ranger’s station, where they saw a deer! After lunch, when everyone got back to our base camp up in the canyon, the Bunnies had free play while the Camping Animals made awesome clay creations. The Dolphins decorated their water bottles, and the Thundercats also made some very cool clay creations.

All of the groups ate some delicious smorgasgorp for snack–we all loved the yogurt-covered raisins! After snack, we packed up, because it looked like rain, and hopped on the bus to sing our afternoon songs. After some great songs, including “The Canoe Song” and our old standard, “On Top of Spaghetti,” we headed out the canyon, driven by our fabulous Bus Driver, Ed.

Tomorrow is our climbing day! We’ll see you there!

Birds of a Feather Day One

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Today we met a new group of campers, some returning for yet another week in our Junior program, and some who are with us at Mountain Day Camp for the first time.  After singing our morning songs to start everyones engines for the day, we reviewed some of our basic rules for staying safe and having a good time at camp.  With all the introductions out of the way we went down to our “mini meadow” to play name games, in which we learned everyones best dance move, and get some energy out.

After our morning activities we broke into our cabin groups, to decorate water bottles, and create group names.  One group of four boys decided on the name “Dinosaur Train T-Rex Bones”, while the other group remains undecided.  With freshly decorated water bottles we joined groups again to trek down to Canyon Park for lunch and games.

Once we arrived at the park we set up camp under a large tree to eat our lunches in the shade, as the sun had finally begun to shine.  At this time we were lucky enough to have our amazing bus driver Ed join us for lunch, which is always a treat for all of us.  After everyone had munched their food, we got a chance to play on the playground in the park.  The swings and slide became favorite attractions.  Following our time on the playground, we set off as adventurers looking for signs of birds that lived in the park.  We were lucky enough to find two birds nests high up in the trees, and spot two birds flying high above.  A little tired and hot we then made our way back to base camp.

The afternoon was a little more low key, as we had some quiet time listening to stories, and got to pick out camp t-shirts for our group pictures.  We then had some time for some free play in the “mini meadow” before settling in for an afternoon snack of GORP, and afternoon songs finished off by the classic “On Top of Spaghetti.”

All in all we had a great day getting to know some new friends and exploring the possibilities of camp this week.  Tomorrow we will be heading up into Eldorado Canyon to visit with the older campers and look for more birds.

Gold Rush in Eldorado Canyon!

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

We had an awesome day in Eldorado Canyon–we began our day with some great morning songs, including “Three Short-Necked Buzzards” and “The Princess Pat.” Then, after everyone was sunscreened and getting full water bottles, we started up our all-camp game of Gold Rush! Each group headed out into the canyon to find gold nuggets that had been left behind by the gold diggers who used to explore Colorado. Then, they had to bring the gold nuggets back to the collection bin–but along the way, they had to look out for the Guards, who steal gold because they are too lazy to search for it themselves. The game was described by campers as “fun, but hard.” Ask your camper how they ended up winning!

We played Gold Rush until lunch, and then the campers ate lunch while they discussed the game. After lunch, the Dolphin Horses made crazy sunglasses, while the Black Wolves made their kites in preparation for meadow day tomorrow. The Grubby Greens made some fabulous pet rocks, and then all three groups enjoyed some free play before snack. For snack, we had some delicious gorp, and after snack we had fun trying to solve some one-minute mysteries. We ended the day with some quieter afternoon songs, including “Ragtime Cowboy Joe” and “On Top of Spaghetti.” Then, we all jumped on the bus and headed home!

Tomorrow, we’re headed up to the Meadow to fly kites and go exploring! Please wear long pants if you have them–the grass is really tall up there! See you tomorrow!

Campers explore Eldorado Canyon!

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Our Eldorado Canyon campers had a great day today–we began our day with lots of goofy wake-up songs, including “The Hippo Song,” “The Princess Pat,” and “One Hen Two Ducks.” Then, we played an awesome game of Evolution to get our blood moving (ask your camper how to play!). After sunscreening and filling up water bottles, the cabin groups headed out–the Dolphin Horses and the Mysterious Grubby Greens hiked down to the Cave, where they ate lunch and explored the recesses of the famous Eldorado Canyon cave. The Black Wolves of the Wild Diamonds headed up Fowler Trail–once above the canyon, they ate lunch and played some great trail games and completed some wonderful teambuilding challenges.

All three groups made sponge bugs today–ask to see your campers’ bug! This afternoon, each group had some great free play time, and also ate some delicious gorp (with M&Ms today!). After snack, we came together as a whole camp group to play Psychology–ask your camper how it’s played–and ended the day with some quieter afternoon songs. We finished the day with our camp standard, “On Top of Spaghetti.”

Tomorrow is POOL DAY! We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Eldorado Canyon Begins Session 4!

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Our Eldorado Canyon program began session 4 with some great morning songs, including “Tarzan” and “Little Red Wagon.” We also ate a morning snack and played a fun game of Ship-Island–ask your campers about the different commands they learned for this game!

After sunscreening and going over our camp rules, we split into our cabin groups for the session. Counselor Tim’s group is named The Black Wolves of the Wild Diamonds, Counselor Zach’s group is named The Dolphin Horses, and Counselor Aly’s group is named The Mysterious Grubby Greens. Each group had a great day coming up with their group name and group code, and also decorating their water bottles! Ask your camper to see their newly decorated water bottle.

Each group also took a hike today–The Black Wolves headed up Eldorado Canyon Trail, while the Mysterious Grubby Greens and the Dolphin Horses headed over to the Rangers’ Station. Each group enjoyed getting to know their fellow group members, and had fun doing some free play and eating delicious gorp for afternoon snack. Ask your camper about their favorite gorp ingredient! We ended the day as a whole group, singing some quieter afternoon songs, including “The Canoe Song,” and, of course, our camp staple, “On Top of Spaghetti.”

Each group also planned their activities for tomorrow–ask your camper what their group is doing tomorrow! Some groups are going hiking, some are making spongebugs, some are going climber watching, and much more! We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Junior heads to Marshall Mesa!

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

We began our second day of this week’s Junior session with some energetic morning songs, including “The Princess Pat” and “The Hippo Song.” After putting on some sunscreen, we headed to the mini-meadow for a fun game of “What Time is It, Mr. Fox?” Everyone was running around everywhere–it was really awesome! Then, we headed back to base camp to make our group codes–each group picked 5 or 6 positive rules that they want to follow at camp. Ask your camper about the rules on their group code!

After our cabin group time, we got all packed up and headed out to Marshall Mesa on MDC’s big yellow bus! It was very exciting to meet Ed, our bus driver. Once at Marshall Mesa, we had some delicious lunch, re-filled our water bottles, and headed out on our adventure. We talked about how Marshall Mesa used to be an ocean, and even saw some fossils embedded in the rocks! It was pretty exciting, even though it was pretty hot today.

In the afternoon, we headed back to base camp for some quiet time–the campers took off their shoes and socks to cool off, and we read some stories to relax. After quiet time, we put our shoes  back on and began work on our dinosaur hats–they’ll be finished tomorrow! Then, we headed outside to eat some delicious gorp, mixed by Director Betsy. Yum! To end the day, we drained our water bottles and sang our camp rendition of “On Top of Spaghetti.”

Tomorrow, we’re headed to NCAR to check out their weather walk and see where dinosaurs used to live. See you tomorrow!

Juniors begin Dinos Chomping Plants week!

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Today was our first day of Dinos Chomping Plants week! It was really exciting to have so many campers–we have two full groups this week, the Green and Yellow Stegosaurouses and the Big Blue Chocolate Racecar Ripstick Dogs (Big Blue for short). We began our day with some awesome morning songs, including “Fred the Moose” and “Turtle in a Box.” After putting on some sunscreen and going over our MDC rules, we headed over to the mini-meadow for a rousing game of “Ship-Island!” (Ask your camper how to play!)

After our morning game, we headed back to base camp to decorate our water bottles–each camper got the opportunity to decorate a unique wrapper for their camp water bottle–and share them with the group. Then, we got all packed up and headed out to Shady Glade for some lunch and some games! Lunch was delicious, and afterwards we played a whole-camp game of tunnel tag, which was very exciting, especially when our Junior Leaders participated. After tunnel tag, we played some name games, and then headed back to base camp for some quiet time.

During quiet time, we read “Green Eggs and Ham” and drank lots of water–it was delicious! After quiet time, we did our group names–each group chose their name as a whole group. Ask your camper about their group name! Then, each camper got their MDC t-shirt and we took group pictures, with our silliest faces, of course. :) Then, we had some delicious gorp, mixed by Director Betsy. It was yummy! After gorp (and drinking lots of water!), we headed back to the mini-meadow for free play. We finished off the day with a quiet rendition of “On Top of Spaghetti.”

Tomorrow, we’re headed to Marshal Mesa to look for fossils! See you tomorrow!

Juniors begin Fun Flowers week!

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Juniors began Fun Flowers week with some amazing morning songs, including “Fred the Moose” and “Little Red Wagon.” After going over our MDC rules, we headed outside to put on some sunscreen, and then headed over to the mini-meadow to play a rousing game of “What Time Is It, Mr Fox?” Then, we headed back to base camp to decorate our water bottles–each camper’s is unique and beautiful, ask your camper what their water bottle looks like!

The two cabin groups in junior are named The Red and Blue Head Lions and Tigers, or Lions and Tigers for short, and The Pink Roses. Ask your camper about their group name! After decorating our water bottles, we headed over to Shady Glade (Canyon Park) to eat lunch and play some fun camp games. After an awesome game of tunnel tag, we played some fun name games with our friendly camp stuffed animals. Then, we headed back to base camp for some quiet time (aka story time), after which we headed outside to get our camp t-shirts and take a group picture. Everyone looked very cool in their MDC shirts!

To finish off the day, we ate some delicious gorp for snack–ask your camper what’s in gorp! It was really yummy–some campers even had seconds! Then, we headed inside to avoid the rain and to do rose and thorn. For rose and thorn, each camper says their rose, or favorite thing, about the day and their thorn, or least favorite thing, about the day. We sang the camp classic “On Top of Spaghetti” to end our day, and are looking forward to another awesome day tomorrow!

Tomorrow, we’re headed up to Eldorado Canyon State Park to eat lunch with some of our older campers–it should be exciting! See you tomorrow!

First day of Wild About Weather!

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Our MDC juniors began our Wild About Weather week today! We began the day with some fun morning songs, including “Fred the Moose” and “Little Red Wagon.” After singing, we went and played an awesome game of “Ship-Island” at the mini-meadow, and then headed back to base camp for some sunscreen, water, and camp rules. We went over our MDC junior camp rules, and then broke up into our cabin groups to decorate our water bottles!

We had a great time decorating and then sharing about our water bottles–each camper’s water bottle is totally unique! Then, we hit the trail, heading to Canyon Park for some lunch and free play time. There was a great mud puddle right in the middle of the park, which was really exciting for all of the campers to play in. After free play, we played a quick game of tunnel tag, then headed back to base camp for some quiet time.

We read stories and drank water during quiet time, then headed outside to do our group names and codes. Our two group names for the week are the Sunny Pink Cheetahs and the Sunny White Lightnings. Ask your camper which group they’re in! Then, we had a surprise visit from Dr. W, who told us all about different weather patterns in Colorado. Then, we ate some delicious gorp for snack, and got our camp t-shirts!

To finish off the day, we sang “On Top of Spaghetti” and talked about what we’re doing tomorrow. We’ll be heading up into Eldorado Canyon to eat lunch with the “big kids,” and we’re also making sunglasses! See you tomorrow for another sun-filled camp day!
