Pool Day in Eldo!

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

We had an awesome day at the pool in Eldorado Canyon today! We sang “Titanic” on the bus, and then began our day at Mesa Trailhead, where we sang “The Hippo Song” and “Let Me See Your Funky Chicken.” Then, we played an awesome game of Zebratonicus tag–ask your camper how it’s played! Each group then discussed how to be safe at the pool before heading off to the Eldorado pool at 10 .a.m.!

Once at the pool, everyone changed into their swimsuits, got a snack, put on some sunscreen, and headed up to the pool! After doing their swim screens, the campers had a great time swimming until lunch. They went off the diving board, played in the “hot tub,” and went down the slide! After lunch, the campers drank lots of water before heading up to the pool for some more swimming and craft time. Lots of campers had a great time doing lanyards, making yarn art, and creating some friendship bracelets! Other campers had a fun time in the pool, playing with the noodles. :)

At the end of the day, we changed back into our clothes and had some delicious watermelon for snack. Everyone was pretty tired from a great day in the pool! We finished up with some quieter afternoon songs, including ” I love the Mountains” and our standard, “On Top of Spaghetti.”

Tomorrow, we’re heading to Walden Ponds to fish and then back to Base Camp to climb on the MDC/AO rock wall! See you there!

Meadow Day!

Friday, July 30th, 2010

The Eldorado Canyon program had an awesome, intense meadow day today–we drove all the way up to the Meadow, and then hopped out to start our day! We began with sunscreening, and then played with MDC’s giant parachute–it was tons of fun! We tossed our hats really high into the air. :) Then, we sang a fun morning song with Counselor Kaela, involving gum trees and waffle irons, before splitting into our cabin groups for the day. The Campfire Camping Animals and Purple Water Diamond Thundercats immediately set out on an epic trek–they hiked all the way down to the river on the Walker Ranch Trail! They spent the whole day away from camp, it was amazing! They made bookmarks and played 5 minute mysteries by the river, and had fun creating a new dam by throwing rocks into the river!

The Electric Pinecone Throwing Bunnies trekked across the meadow to do some animal tracking–although they found no animal tracks, they found lots of animal scat and a deer bed as well! In the afternoon, they did lanyards during some free play and also made kites and dissected owl pellets. They had tons of fun “chillaxing,” in one camper’s words, and generally having lots of fun with Counselor Kaela. We finished up our day with some delicious smorgasgorp mixed by Director Betsy, and some afternoon songs, including a special version of “Fred the Moose,” involving a Vermont Moose, sung by two of our returning campers! The Purple Water Diamond Thundercats did an amazing job helping pack up all the gear, and the campers did a great job finishing up their Friday!

The Meadow was an awesome day–expect your campers to be tired, we had lots of campers fall asleep on the bus on the way home! :) We drank tons of water, and the campers will probably want to drink even more when they get home!

Monday, we’re back in the Canyon, and we’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Eldorado Canyon has Fantastic Last Day!

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

We had an awesome final day of session four in Eldorado Canyon! We began the day by singing the bus song “Titanic” one last time, and did lots of fun morning songs, including “Fred the Moose” and “Hello, My Name is Joe.” Then, we played a final game of “Matching” with the whole camp before campers split into their cabin groups. Once the campers got into their groups, they put on sunscreen, drank water, and prepared for their day.

The Dolphin Horses packed up and headed down Rattlesnake Gulch trail–luckily, they didn’t see any rattlesnakes! :) Meanwhile, the Grubby Greens practiced their skit and played with the MDC costumes all morning long. Just before lunch, however, their Counselor, Aly, went missing! So the campers followed a series of clues and managed to find Aly just in time for lunch. The Dolphin Horses ate lunch on the trail, and got back to base camp in the early afternoon. In the afternoon, the Dolphin Horses practiced their skit, while the Grubby Greens made fabulous marbelized paper–ask to see your camper’s paper, it looks awesome!

All the groups came together to do their skits for the whole group, and the skits were a hit! Everyone enjoyed watching everyone else perform! After skits, the Dolphin Horses made marbelized paper, and then both groups did a closing activity where they received a p-cord bracelet. We finished off the day with delicious gorp for snack, mixed by the Grubby Greens, and ended the day with a rendition of “I love the Mountains” and a camper-led version of “On Top of Spaghetti.”

We had an awesome time this session, we hope to see  you again this summer or next year! :)

Eldorado Canyon visits Walden Ponds!

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Today the Eldorado Canyon campers visited Walden Ponds–we had a ton of fun fishing and looking at the swamp wildlife! Everyone was a bit tired to begin with this morning, but perked up after some fun morning songs, including “The Fishing Song” and “Princess Pat.” We tried a morning game, but it was a little too hot, so we grabbed our water bottles and played waterfall instead! After sunscreening, the Mysterious Grubby Greens worked on their cabin shield and ordered some gorp for tomorrow, while the Dolphin Horses headed out to do some fishing with Bus Driver Ed!

After lunch, the two groups switched–the Grubby Greens went fishing while the Dolphin Horses did face painting and created recycled instruments. It was super-hot today, so we spent a lot of time chilling in the shade. However, the Grubby Greens had a ton of fun fishing, and also enjoyed finding some snails and a tadpole! At the very end of the day, Counselor Aly found a frog, which was exciting for everyone. :) We finished the day off with some delicious smorgas-gorp for snack and some afternoon songs, including “The Donut Shop” and “On Top of Spaghetti.”

We’re back in the Canyon tomorrow for our last day of the session–it should be amazing! See you there!

Pool Day in Eldorado Canyon!

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

We had an awesome pool day in Eldorado Canyon! We began the day at Mesa Trailhead–we sang some energetic morning songs, including “The Princess Pat” and “Washerwoman.” Then, we played a fun morning game of amoeba tag–when a camper gets tagged by the amoeba, they have to join the amoeba! We discussed pool rules, then hopped on the bus to go to the pool! Once at the pool, everyone changed, sunscreened, drank water, and jumped into the pool!

All of the campers had a great time playing with the MDC noodles and enjoyed the sunshine this morning. The diving board and slide were both big hits! We all hopped out for lunch, during which we all made sure to drink lots of water. After lunch, the Dolphin Horses did their cabin group shield, which goes on the MDC bus forever, and the Mysterious Grubby Greens did some amazing-looking lanyards. The afternoon was great–the campers and all of the counselors put on a show at the diving board, doing all sorts of fun, funky dives and jumps!

We ended the day with some delicious watermelon for snack–it was wonderful! We ended by singing “I love the mountains” and our favorite song, “On Top of Spaghetti.” We got on the bus just in time–we beat the rain by about 30 seconds!

Tomorrow, we’re headed to Walden Ponds! We’ll see you there!

Bouldering in Eldorado Canyon!

Monday, July 19th, 2010

We had a great second Monday of Session 4 in Eldorado Canyon–we began the day with some fun morning songs, including “Fred the Moose” and “The Princess Pat.” Then, we played an awesome game of “Matching”–each camper found a partner, and then had to follow a sequence of directions with their partner. Ask your camper how it’s played; the kids had a great time playing!

Once the campers split into their cabin groups, they put on sunscreen and got some water before starting on the day’s activities. The Dolphin Horses and Mysterious Grubby Greens headed out together up the Eldo Trail, where they caught some bugs and enjoyed exploring Eldorado Canyon! The groups headed back to the pad for lunch–we ate as a big group, which was really fun! After lunch, the Mysterious Grubby Greens headed over to the Bouldering rock for some hi-tech bouldering, while the Dolphin Horses made some awesome tumblebugs.

Then, the groups switched–the Dolphin Horses had a great time bouldering, and the Grubby Greens really enjoyed making and playing with their tumblebugs. Ask to see your camper’s! We ended the day with some delicious gorp, mixed by Director Tommy. After snack, we packed everything up and ended the day with some afternoon songs, including “Ragtime Cowboy Joe,” “The Canoe Song,” and, of course, “On Top of Spaghetti.”

Tomorrow is climbing day–we’re excited, and we’ll see you then!

Pool Day in Eldorado Canyon!

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Today was our first pool day of Session 4 in Eldorado Canyon, and it was awesome! We began our day at Mesa Trailhead (the Eldorado Springs pool doesn’t open until 10 am), singing songs and playing some fun games. After getting woken up and well-hydrated, we hopped back on the bus and headed to Eldorado Springs pool!

Once at the pool, we all changed into our swimsuits and headed to the pool for the swim screen–all of our campers swam like fish! We stayed nice and cool in the water all day, hopping out only for lunch and a few afternoon crafts. The campers really enjoyed the pool’s slide and diving board, and our MDC noodles were a big hit! The campers also loved doing lanyards, making bead crafts, and gluing together popsicle stick creations when they weren’t in the pool. But mostly, everyone stayed in the pool, getting out only for water and more sunscreen!

We ended the day with some delicious watermelon for snack and some fun water-drinking games. We also sang “The Canoe Song” and our old favorite, “On Top of Spaghetti.” What a great day!

Tomorrow, we’re back in the canyon for more awesome activities and crafts! See you tomorrow!

Juniors finish Dinos Chomping Plants with a bang!

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

The end of Dinos Chomping Plants week was amazing! We began our day with a weather report–unsurprisingly, most of the campers were a little cloudy because they were a little bit tired. We encouraged the sun to come out with some great morning songs, including “The Hippo Song” and “Fred the Moose.” After sunscreening, we headed over to the mini-meadow, where we played a great game of “Ship-Island” and also did some “Scream Runs.” The campers got to yell while running from counselor to counselor (a great way to get that energy out and going)!

Once we finished our morning games, we headed back to base camp, where we made some awesome dinosaur clay creations. Ask your camper to see their clay creation! We encouraged a dinosaur theme, but the kids were very creative and many chose to make their own projects. After finishing up our clay projects, we headed to the mini-meadow for lunch–it was delicious! Then, we headed over to our MDC rock wall for some climb time.

The kids had a wonderful time climbing–each camper got a chance to climb two times, and all of the campers did a great job of cheering on their friends when they were climbing. Our rock wall has fossils embedded in it, so it was a great chance to discuss fossils with the campers as well! After climbing (and going on a quick tooth hunt to find a camper’s tooth which had fallen out), we headed down to Boulder Creek Trail for some free play.

While we almost made it back to camp, we got caught in the rain a little bit–it was fun to run through the rain, though! Once back at camp, we had some quiet time and then ate our gorp (chosen by the Green and Yellow Stegosauruses group!). It was really yummy! After snack, we did some relay races to get our energy out, and finished off the day by discussing our rose and thorn for the whole week–each camper said their favorite and least favorite thing about the whole week. We ended with a quick game of “The wave” and with a rousing rendition of “On Top on Spaghetti.” What a great week!

Next week is Incredible Insects! We’ll see you then!

Juniors go to Spruce Pool!

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Today was an awesome pool day in Junior! We began our day with lots of fun water-based songs, including “The Swimming Song” and “The Fishing Song.” After singing and sunscreening, we headed over to the mini-meadow for a great game of “What Time Is It, Mr Fox.” It was tons of fun–all the campers got a chance to be bunnies and foxes. Then, we headed back to base camp, where the Big Blue group mixed their gorp and the Green and Yellow Stegosauruses made their cabin group sign. After our cabin group time, we packed up and headed out to the pool!

On the way to the pool, we stopped to eat lunch at the mini-meadow. It was delicious, and everyone did a great job of eating their healthy food first, in order to have lots of energy for pool day. After eating, we walked to the pool, put on even more sunscreen, and hopped in the water! We had tons of fun at the pool today–the kids had a great time playing! Once we hopped out, everyone drank lots of water before changing into dry clothes.

Once we were all changed out of our swimsuits, we headed back to base camp for some quiet time–and boy were we all tired! After listening to some stories, we headed outside to eat the yummy gorp that had been mixed earlier in the day by the Big Blue group. Then, we finished off the day with rose and thorn–each camper said their favorite and least favorite thing about the day. Unsurprisingly, the pool was cited often as a rose, while leaving the pool was often cited as a thorn. We ended the day with a lovely rendition of “On Top of Spaghetti.”

Tomorrow, we’re headed down to Boulder Creek Trail to enjoy the creek and play some tunnel tag. See  you tomorrow!

Juniors Visit NCAR!

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Juniors began our morning with “Fred the Moose,” “Leo the Lion,” and “Little Red Wagon.” We stretched out a little bit, then sunscreened up and headed to the mini-meadow for a wonderful game of Ship-Island. We learned lots of new commands! After playing, we headed back to base camp to order our gorp–each group got to decide what ingredients to put in the gorp for the remainder of the week. Then, we finished up our dinosaur hats! All of the campers looked fabulous! :)

After finishing our hats, we packed up, re-filled our water bottles, and headed out to NCAR on MDC’s big yellow bus. Everyone was very excited to see Ed, the MDC bus driver, again. We ate lunch upon our arrival at NCAR, then went on NCAR’s weather walk, where we learned about the different habitats of different dinosaurs. Ask your camper what dinosaurs live by the river, what dinosaurs live on the grasslands, and what dinosaurs live in the tops of trees! After our adventure at NCAR, we headed back to base camp for some quiet time.

During quiet time, we read “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss and drank a lot of water out of our water bottles. After a bit of a rest, we all headed outside to eat some delicious gorp for snack, mixed by Director Betsy. Tomorrow, the campers will get to mix their own gorp! After snack, we finished off the day with rose and thorn–each camper said their favorite and least favorite part of the camp day. We ended by singing “On Top of Spaghetti” in our nicest voices. :)

Tomorrow, we’re heading to Spruce Pool–if each camper could come to camp wearing their bathing suits and clothes over their bathing suit, that would be perfect! See you tomorrow!
