Great Tuesday in Eldorado Canyon!

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

We had an awesome day in Eldorado Canyon! We began our day by singing some fun morning songs, including “Tarzan” and “Peanut Butter Reeses Cup.” Then, we played a great all-camp game of “Evil-ution,” where the kids played rock-paper-scissors to eventually turn into Dr. Evil! (They start out as eggs, then turn into chickens, then turn into dinosaurs, then turn into Dr. Evil!) After our all-camp game, we split into our cabin groups–each group sunscreened and filled up their water bottles, and then began their day!

The Purple Water Diamond Thundercats headed down to the cave with Counselor Leah and Bus Driver Ed–they had such a great time at the cave that they decided to hike all the way down to the lower ranger station! Meanwhile, the Pinecone Throwing Bunnies headed over to the ranger station to make animal houses, while the Campfire Animals did some fun teambuilding challenges and caught some butterflies. After lunch, the Thundercats and the Bunnies did some cool marble painting, while the Campfire Animals created some groovy spongebugs. All the campers got their camp t-shirts today and took camp pictures–look online for your camper’s photo!

We got a little wet this afternoon, but we put up canopies and kept right on playing! We had an opportunity to help out the YMCA today–they weren’t prepared for the rain, so they hopped on our bus while we put up canopies, put on ponchos and rain gear, and continued with our awesome day! We finished up our day with some delicious gorp for snack, and then hopped on the bus to sing, because we saw lightning across the canyon. It was an exciting day!

Tomorrow, we’re headed to the pool! See you there!

Juniors finish Dinos Chomping Plants with a bang!

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

The end of Dinos Chomping Plants week was amazing! We began our day with a weather report–unsurprisingly, most of the campers were a little cloudy because they were a little bit tired. We encouraged the sun to come out with some great morning songs, including “The Hippo Song” and “Fred the Moose.” After sunscreening, we headed over to the mini-meadow, where we played a great game of “Ship-Island” and also did some “Scream Runs.” The campers got to yell while running from counselor to counselor (a great way to get that energy out and going)!

Once we finished our morning games, we headed back to base camp, where we made some awesome dinosaur clay creations. Ask your camper to see their clay creation! We encouraged a dinosaur theme, but the kids were very creative and many chose to make their own projects. After finishing up our clay projects, we headed to the mini-meadow for lunch–it was delicious! Then, we headed over to our MDC rock wall for some climb time.

The kids had a wonderful time climbing–each camper got a chance to climb two times, and all of the campers did a great job of cheering on their friends when they were climbing. Our rock wall has fossils embedded in it, so it was a great chance to discuss fossils with the campers as well! After climbing (and going on a quick tooth hunt to find a camper’s tooth which had fallen out), we headed down to Boulder Creek Trail for some free play.

While we almost made it back to camp, we got caught in the rain a little bit–it was fun to run through the rain, though! Once back at camp, we had some quiet time and then ate our gorp (chosen by the Green and Yellow Stegosauruses group!). It was really yummy! After snack, we did some relay races to get our energy out, and finished off the day by discussing our rose and thorn for the whole week–each camper said their favorite and least favorite thing about the whole week. We ended with a quick game of “The wave” and with a rousing rendition of “On Top on Spaghetti.” What a great week!

Next week is Incredible Insects! We’ll see you then!

Juniors Head to Fish Observatory

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Today was pretty rainy and cold, as everyone noticed (and talked about a lot)! So instead of going swimming, we decided to change our day around a bit. We started out with some fun songs, including “The Alligator is My Friend” and “Head and Shoulders.” Then, we played with a big bag full of balloons! It was exciting to see how long we could keep the bag up in the air without its touching the ground. Then, we split into groups and made paper-bag snake puppets! The campers really got into making them–ask your camper to make their snake talk!

After working on our snakes, we got packed up and headed out for our Rain Walk. We got to walk all the way to the Fish Observatory (28th and Arapahoe, by Boulder Creek). It was really cool to see all the different things brought out by the rain–we saw worms, and the rain made it easier to see spiderwebs, too. After eating lunch under an awning by the creek, we fed the fish and looked through the obervatory’s windows for awhile. Then, we headed back to Base Camp, through the rain!

Back at Base Camp, we took off all our wet things and settled down for some quiet time. We read “Star-Bellied Sneetches” and also “Where the Wild Things Are.” Everyone was pretty tired after our big hike! We then split up into groups for some afternoon group time–the Thunderheads mixed their gorp, the Chicken Flowers made a beautiful group picture, and the Pink Ponies finished up their snakes.

We ate snack inside (the delicious gorp mixed by the Thunderheads!) and then had some free play with our snakes. The campers had a great time introducing their snakes to each other and having their snakes eat various things around the room! We finished up the day outside–we used our snakes to talk about our favorite activity of the day, and then sang “On Top of Spaghetti” with a lot of extra “ssss”es! Tomorrow, we’re going bug catching and possibly making frog hats; it should be a really exciting end to our Reptiles week!

Eldorado Canyon Day 1

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Today was our first day with Session 4 in Eldorado Canyon! We had a great day, despite sitting on the bus during all the rain, hail, and lightning…yikes! The day started with some fun songs, learning some general camp rules, and meeting counselors as well as other campers. It was awesome when all the campers played a fun game of SHIP ISLAND!

Water bottles, cabin group codes, cabin group names were all made today…be sure to ask your camper what their names are. I know some include Wild Bobcats, Timberwolves, and DECOM. There are a few others, but I don’t want to give them all away!

After completing our group tasks, we ate some yummy lunch, and then we got on the bus to avoid the rain, only to get off the bus to play a few games, or finish what we didn’t get to before the rain, and ate some AMAZING GORP! We love our GORP, and each cabin group will have a chance to create their own GORP recipe before the end of the session.

We ended the day with packing up our gear, and singing a few songs, including the infamous “On Top of Spaghetti”… We end each day with that song! All in all, it was a great day, and we can’t wait to see everyone tomorrow!

Chautauqua Park and Sunglasses

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Day two of American Spirit week (Session E) began well with some fun camp songs and group teambuilding time. We also did some stretching, as some of the campers were tired after their fun-filled first day! We then packed everything up and headed to Chautauqua Park for lunch and a short hike. We ate lunch under the trees, but before we could go on our hike, we started seeing some lightning and hearing some thunder.

After feeling a little bit of rain, we decided not to go hiking, so instead we trooped over to the ranger’s station, where we looked at several stuffed and mounted animals, all of which can be found in Colorado. While in the ranger’s station, we got to look at several butterfly specimens and we got to pet some very soft furs. It was really fun, and the rangers were great about answering our many questions!

We then headed back to our home base, the Living School, and had some rest time after drinking lots of water. After resting for a bit, we decorated sunglasses for the Fourth of July weekend! We used red, white, and blue pipe cleaners as well as foam to make some very cool, very patriotic sunglasses.

Leaving our creations to dry, we ate some “M&M-y Goldfish” Gorp mixed by the Fire-Breathing Jetskis Group. Everyone agreed that it was very yummy. After we finished our snack, we did some Free Play; all of the campers this week are having a great time with board games and puzzles. We closed the day with some great end-of-day songs, including Silver Choral Bells and, of course, the classic MDC version of On Top of Spaghetti.
