Meadow Day!

Friday, July 30th, 2010

The Eldorado Canyon program had an awesome, intense meadow day today–we drove all the way up to the Meadow, and then hopped out to start our day! We began with sunscreening, and then played with MDC’s giant parachute–it was tons of fun! We tossed our hats really high into the air. :) Then, we sang a fun morning song with Counselor Kaela, involving gum trees and waffle irons, before splitting into our cabin groups for the day. The Campfire Camping Animals and Purple Water Diamond Thundercats immediately set out on an epic trek–they hiked all the way down to the river on the Walker Ranch Trail! They spent the whole day away from camp, it was amazing! They made bookmarks and played 5 minute mysteries by the river, and had fun creating a new dam by throwing rocks into the river!

The Electric Pinecone Throwing Bunnies trekked across the meadow to do some animal tracking–although they found no animal tracks, they found lots of animal scat and a deer bed as well! In the afternoon, they did lanyards during some free play and also made kites and dissected owl pellets. They had tons of fun “chillaxing,” in one camper’s words, and generally having lots of fun with Counselor Kaela. We finished up our day with some delicious smorgasgorp mixed by Director Betsy, and some afternoon songs, including a special version of “Fred the Moose,” involving a Vermont Moose, sung by two of our returning campers! The Purple Water Diamond Thundercats did an amazing job helping pack up all the gear, and the campers did a great job finishing up their Friday!

The Meadow was an awesome day–expect your campers to be tired, we had lots of campers fall asleep on the bus on the way home! :) We drank tons of water, and the campers will probably want to drink even more when they get home!

Monday, we’re back in the Canyon, and we’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Chilly Day in Eldorado!

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Day 6 of Session 1 in Eldorado Canyon was pretty chilly, but we managed to have a good time despite the weather! We began our day with some awesome songs, including the Moose Song and Head and Shoulders, Baby. Then, we got our blood flowing with a rousing game of Ship Island! After going over all of our main camp rules, we split into cabin groups for the day.

Because it was so cold, we put up our tented canopies and kept ourselves warm all morning! The Mousie-Wowsie Cheeseheads (formerly known as the Tree Climbing Lizards) had an awesome morning making some new group waterbottles, a new group code, and doing some fun teambuilding games. The Blue Striped Trees and the Junior Leaders headed down to the Cave for some bouldering, skits and role-playing, and general hilarity. The Tigers, meanwhile, played some word games, dissected some Owl Pellets, and played Charades!

After lunch, the Tigers headed out for some Fishing in our local South Boulder Creek, while the Cheeseheads played a rousing game of toilet tag. Then, the Cheeseheads dissected Owl Pellets while the Tigers did some free play and teambuilding. At that point, it was time for some gorp, so all of the groups enjoyed some delicious “Super Fussy Tiger Gorp,” that was mixed by our very own Tigers during the morning! The Junior Leaders and Blue Striped Trees re-joined us for snack, and helped all of the groups get their tented canopies packed up so that we could sing some songs!

We finished off the day with some quieter, more relaxed afternoon songs, then packed up the bus and headed home. Remember, tomorrow is our climbing day, so come ready to scale the heights! (It should also be warmer tomorrow, so get ready for a super-fun, super-active day!)

Cherry Creek Day 4! Park and Pool fun!

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

We started our sunny day by putting on lots of sunscreen and bug spray, singing the Titanic song, and playing tons of tag games! It seems that the Moose Song and Toilet Tag are becoming a favorite amoung all the campers!

Next we all got to be scientist by disecting owl pellets and learning the different kinds of animals owls eat. It was great getting to see where all the bones came from on our animal skeleton charts! After we washed our hands (very well) we set up a tarp under a big, shady tree for lunch, and watched all the Canada Geese and their babies eat. We also got to share our lunch with a lot of very interesting bugs, like ants, spiders, and hanging worms of some kind!

Before we made our afternoon journey to the pool, we played a little frisbee golf around our site and found that we have some great frisbee players! The pool was a lot of fun for everyone! The weather was great, and all the kids had fun playing games, making new friends, and diving for toys!

Before we finished the day, we all dried off while eating our “Chunkie Monkey” GORP and planned out the next three days of camp! We have a lot of fun stuff coming up!

2/16 Camp Day-Lots of Sun!

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

We had a small group on our camp day yesterday, and the campers and counselors loved it! The campers liked having more individual attention and getting to play (like with legos!) with the counselor a little more than usual.

We started the day with camp songs and the campers all gave their requests. Once we were warmed up, we created our Group Code and got ready for our hike.

We were lucky to have Tim the counselor with us on our hike at Sawhill Ponds. He showed us a tree where he sometimes finds owl pellets and lots of good areas for exploring and finding birds in the preserve. It was nice to have lots of sun and be warmed by it as we hiked and ate our lunches. We also enjoyed seeing lots of planes fly over with gliders attached from the Boulder Airport.

Play was next when we got back to the school and then it was time for art. We made sculptures from recycled items that ranged from a bunny hutch to a 3-story apartment building to a vehicle that travels in outer space. Even the counselors got to create some cool creations from our imaginations.

We wrapped up the day with some quiet play that included lots of legos. It was fun to build a little farm community and all the things that would also be on a farm. We can’t wait for camp next Monday!
