Awesome Day in Eldorado Canyon!

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

We had a great second Monday in Eldorado Canyon–we began our day with some wonderful morning songs, including “Fred the Moose” and “Little Red Wagon.” After singing, we played a rousing game of Ship-Island–ask your campers about the different commands! Then, we split up into our different groups and had a quick snack, put on some sunscreen and filled up our water bottles, and then began our day!

The Electric Pinecone-Throwing Bunnies and the Campfire Camping Animals headed out together on a hike–we hiked all the way along Fowler Trail, and then headed out of the park and into the wild! It was very exciting to go into the wilderness; we crossed a stream, saw lots of wildflowers, and found a nice shady spot to eat lunch. Meanwhile, the Thundercats headed out on an epic bouldering/hiking trip–check out the amazing photos they took! (You can find them online at myaocamps.com.) Meanwhile, Counselor Leah’s group, the Swimming Jumping Dolphins, took a short trek over to the ranger’s station, where they saw a deer! After lunch, when everyone got back to our base camp up in the canyon, the Bunnies had free play while the Camping Animals made awesome clay creations. The Dolphins decorated their water bottles, and the Thundercats also made some very cool clay creations.

All of the groups ate some delicious smorgasgorp for snack–we all loved the yogurt-covered raisins! After snack, we packed up, because it looked like rain, and hopped on the bus to sing our afternoon songs. After some great songs, including “The Canoe Song” and our old standard, “On Top of Spaghetti,” we headed out the canyon, driven by our fabulous Bus Driver, Ed.

Tomorrow is our climbing day! We’ll see you there!

Great Tuesday in Eldorado Canyon!

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

We had an awesome day in Eldorado Canyon! We began our day by singing some fun morning songs, including “Tarzan” and “Peanut Butter Reeses Cup.” Then, we played a great all-camp game of “Evil-ution,” where the kids played rock-paper-scissors to eventually turn into Dr. Evil! (They start out as eggs, then turn into chickens, then turn into dinosaurs, then turn into Dr. Evil!) After our all-camp game, we split into our cabin groups–each group sunscreened and filled up their water bottles, and then began their day!

The Purple Water Diamond Thundercats headed down to the cave with Counselor Leah and Bus Driver Ed–they had such a great time at the cave that they decided to hike all the way down to the lower ranger station! Meanwhile, the Pinecone Throwing Bunnies headed over to the ranger station to make animal houses, while the Campfire Animals did some fun teambuilding challenges and caught some butterflies. After lunch, the Thundercats and the Bunnies did some cool marble painting, while the Campfire Animals created some groovy spongebugs. All the campers got their camp t-shirts today and took camp pictures–look online for your camper’s photo!

We got a little wet this afternoon, but we put up canopies and kept right on playing! We had an opportunity to help out the YMCA today–they weren’t prepared for the rain, so they hopped on our bus while we put up canopies, put on ponchos and rain gear, and continued with our awesome day! We finished up our day with some delicious gorp for snack, and then hopped on the bus to sing, because we saw lightning across the canyon. It was an exciting day!

Tomorrow, we’re headed to the pool! See you there!

Juniors Visit NCAR!

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Juniors began our morning with “Fred the Moose,” “Leo the Lion,” and “Little Red Wagon.” We stretched out a little bit, then sunscreened up and headed to the mini-meadow for a wonderful game of Ship-Island. We learned lots of new commands! After playing, we headed back to base camp to order our gorp–each group got to decide what ingredients to put in the gorp for the remainder of the week. Then, we finished up our dinosaur hats! All of the campers looked fabulous! :)

After finishing our hats, we packed up, re-filled our water bottles, and headed out to NCAR on MDC’s big yellow bus. Everyone was very excited to see Ed, the MDC bus driver, again. We ate lunch upon our arrival at NCAR, then went on NCAR’s weather walk, where we learned about the different habitats of different dinosaurs. Ask your camper what dinosaurs live by the river, what dinosaurs live on the grasslands, and what dinosaurs live in the tops of trees! After our adventure at NCAR, we headed back to base camp for some quiet time.

During quiet time, we read “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss and drank a lot of water out of our water bottles. After a bit of a rest, we all headed outside to eat some delicious gorp for snack, mixed by Director Betsy. Tomorrow, the campers will get to mix their own gorp! After snack, we finished off the day with rose and thorn–each camper said their favorite and least favorite part of the camp day. We ended by singing “On Top of Spaghetti” in our nicest voices. :)

Tomorrow, we’re heading to Spruce Pool–if each camper could come to camp wearing their bathing suits and clothes over their bathing suit, that would be perfect! See you tomorrow!

Swim day in Eldo!

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Swimming, swimming, in the swimming pool… It turned out to be a great day for swimming in Eldorado Springs today! We had a great bus ride into Eldorado Springs, and stopped at the Mesa trailhead before going to the pool (we thought it was sill a little chilly!). We sang lots of songs, ask your camper about the swimming song (it is a lot like BINGO), and played a few camp games. We broke into our cabin groups for about an hour, and we all did lots of cool things! We could see groups playing camouflage, building animal homes, doing team building activities, and going on mini-treks to explore a bit.

After some time at the trailhead, we loaded back up onto the bus, and headed to the pool! We were all so relieved when we got there, because we were all starving! We ate when we first got to the pool, then changed and got in for some pool time! Many of the campers were brave and stuck out the cold spring water, but the rest of us went to the upper deck to make friendship bracelets, popsicle stick homes, and lanyards. Lanyards were the popular choice, and ask your camper if they made one.

We changed, packed up,  and had some snacks before singing more songs and playing a camp favorite game: Detective. We will play this many more times this session. We had a great day, got some sun, and I know I am ready for a restful evening and good sleep to get ready for tomorrow. I am sure your camper is too! We have a day full of fun and heat in the canyon tomorrow. Come ready for some fun and nature exploration!

Fishing Day

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Our fun filled day began with the traditional energetic morning songs. Today we sang “Little Spaceship,” “I’m awide, awake, alert, enthusiastic” which is to the tune of “Head and Shoulders,” and our last song was the days theme song of “Fishing.” After morning songs we did some preparatory stretches for our next activity, the obstacle course. The obstacle course was a lot of fun and included some really cool obstacles such as “the cave,” “the river,” “the rapids” and a few others. The kids all were awesome and thought up inventive ways to go through the obstacles that the counselors had not expected.

By the time we had all made it through the obstacle course, it was time to load up the bus for our exciting field trip to the sawhill ponds. It was lunch time when we got there so we all sat down at the picnic tables to enjoy our food. Finally it was time to go fishing and bug catching. At the bug catching station all the campers caught grasshoppers, and a few other cool bugs. We also found a turtle shell with some of the other bones still inside. the fishers all learned the patience required for fishing, and all got lots of practice in waiting. The campers caught some sticks and pond moss, and even got a few fish bites. To keep cool, all the campers would periodically run through “the mist” (spray bottles of water). Some of the campers insisted on mist for their bug catchers and name-tags as well.

We all returned to the living school hot and tired, but happy. It was nice to take a break in the cool dark school and listen to some stories read by counselor Keenan and Michelle. After rest time, we sampled some phenomenal Honey Nut GORP mixed by the Cody, Owen, Grady, Charlie group. Feeling rejuvenated the campers all pulled out games to play, and settled down for some good fun. In no time at all we were packing up, singing songs and heading home.

Tuesday at Dowdy Draw

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Today was an awesome, fun day. We started out with some high energy songs including “Tarzan” and “LaTush” which the campers continued to sing through out the day. After morning songs, we all headed out side for an energetic game of “What Time is it Mr. Fox?” always a favorite with the kids. By the time all of the bunnies had all been turned into foxes-they got tagged, the bus was here and it was time to head out for or hike

Our hike today was at Dowdy Draw which is out near hwy 170 (Eldorado Springs Road). We found some really cool bugs-Daddy Long Legs, rolly-pollies, butterflies, lady bugs- and built a little pool by damming up the water in the trickle that crossed the path near our lunch spot. All the kids were such good sports while hiking especially given how warm it was. But I think everyone was happy to get back inside the living school where it was much cooler.

Back at our home base (the living school) we took a little time to rest after our hike and Counselor Keanan read some fun books. After our break, we all got into our cabin groups and did some team building activities. Then, it was snack time, many campers favorite part of the day, where we enjoyed some scrumptious gorp called “Bug Pretzels” invented and mixed by The Bug Explorers.

When snack time concluded, all the campers had amazing amounts of energy probably from the gorp they just ate, so we decided to play a very active game. Unfortunately at that moment it started raining outside, so instead, we had an awesome crab walking relay race. Some of the campers were very inventive and used the slippery floor to slide across to go faster. Finally it was Play time, and everyone got out their favorite games. Our hike must not have been long enough, because some of the campers still had tons of energy so Counselor Kristen took them outside to run around-as the rain had ceased, and to do other rambunctious activities.

Quiet songs are always a great way to close such an energetic day at camp, so counselors Michelle and Kristen led us all in “White Coral Bells” and “Make New Friends.” With the last notes of these songs still lingering in the air, we all packed up and headed home, tired and happy.
