Juniors head to Mesa Trailhead!

We started off Wednesday with some stretching, some awesome camp songs, and a great game of shark tag. We stretched out a little bit because everyone was a little tired, and then sang “Little Red Wagon” and “Tarzan” to warm up our voices. Then, we played a rousing game of shark tag (have your camper teach you how to play)!

After our game, we headed inside for some group time–we did our group photos, and The Red Raiders did some teambuilding while the Blue-Green Dolphins made popsicle stick sculptures. We had a quick snack from our lunches and then got prepped for our adventure to Mesa Trailhead! With full water bottles, we headed onto the bus and sang some really fun bus songs on the way–ask your camper about “Mmm-Ahh Went the Little Green Frog.”

At Mesa Trailhead, we went on a quick hike to orient ourselves to the area, and then had lunch under the shade of some giant trees. After lunch, we headed down to the creek to see if we could view any of nature’s swimmers. Counselors Derek and Jen hopped into the water to catch some cool stuff for the kids to see–everyone got to touch some algae and have a close-up look at some waterbugs. Then, Counselor Derek caught a crawfish! The group named him “Crabby the Crawfish” and took a good long look at his cool pincers.

After the crawfish excitement, we headed back to Base Camp for some quiet time and free play. During quiet time, we read stories and drank a lot of water–it was hot today! After quiet time, The Red Raiders mixed their gorp recipe up for the group, while the Blue-Green Dolphins finished their fabulous swimmers sculptures. Then, we all headed outside for some delicious snack (the gorp that was mixed moments before by The Red Raiders!) and some free play. The campers had a great time pretending to be puppies, bunnies, and tigers!

We finished off the day with some circle time and songs–we talked about going to the pool tomorrow, and did our rose and thorn for the day. Everyone was excited to have seen the crawfish! We ended by singing “Bumblebee Tuna” and “On Top of Spaghetti.” Tomorrow, we’re headed to Spruce Pool to become swimmers ourselves–look out waterbugs, here we come!
